Toothache Remedies for Toddlers

Toothache can be incredibly common in toddlers. Causes may be tooth decay, chipped tooth, or food trapped between teeth. And toddlers, cannot easily explain discomfort, they cannot describe what they are feeling. As parents, we feel puzzled on what to do in this certain situations.

Believe me, I have been with my son for 3 years and sometimes I am still perplexed with what he wants or what he's feeling. So what do we do when my kid experience discomfort because of toothache?

Warm water with salt

Take a glass of warm water. Warm, not hot. Just warm enough for your kid. And mix a teaspoon of salt. And use it as a mouthwash. I have read that salt helps kill bacteria and warm water eases discomfort of the swelling gums

Ice cube or cold compress

When I was a kid, this works like magic. Just put an ice cube in a cloth and place it in your child's cheek near on the affected area. It is said that this reduces swelling and inflammation

Xylogel

Apply a small amount of xylogel on cotton buds or your fingertips and gently apply on the affected gums or teeth. Sometimes, I mix this with my child's toothpaste. Xylogel is used for teething pain and provides cooling effect on gums. This may be used by adults too.

Over the counter/Prescribed meds by Pedia

Recently, my son was suffering from toothache. We couldn't sleep at night because of the discomfort he's been feeling so his pediatrician prescribe Paracetamol to relieve pain from toothache. If the pain is intolerable, it is better to consult your child's pediatrician/dentist.

It's hard to deal with toothache especially for our kids. They cannot put pain into words. Here are tips to prevent toothache:

1. Let's help our kids develop a good oral hygiene. Encourage them to brush their teeth 3x a day to prevent cavity build-up

2. Visit dentist atleast every 3 to 4 months. I suggest that you choose a dental clinic specifically for kids instead of a regular one to prevent dental trauma to your child.

3. Limit the sugar and encourage our kids to eat healthy snacks.

4. Have a routine to rinse their mouth everytime they eat sweets.
